EU Directives and Legislation

A Directive is EU legislation which Member States must translate into national legislation. Note that Directives are binding on national governments and their agencies as soon as they are adopted – even though no legislation to implement them has been passed at national level.

BiP provides a series of downloadable forms and guidance below on EU directives and legislation in relation to tender notices.

Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU)

The Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) is the EU’s official publication of record and a valuable source of information on tender notices. All public sector tender notices that are valued above a certain amount are required to be published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Since the Nice Treaty in 2003, the OJEU has been published and is now available in each of the EU’s 20 languages.

Before the Official Journal of the European Union existed, the Official Journal of the European Coal and Steel Community was in print, coming into existence in 1952 before becoming the Official Journal of the European Community (OJEC).

OJEU is made up of three series:

  • L series – contains information on EU directives and legislation
  • C series – contains important announcements and reports from the European Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance
  • S series – contains tender notices
